When Solomon became king over Israel, he asked God to grant him the understanding to distinguish right from wrong and then the ability to influence the people properly.
“Give me an understanding heart so that I can govern your people well and know the difference between right and wrong. For who by himself is able to govern this great people of yours.”
1 Kings 3:9 NLT
“Give your servant an understanding heart (or a heart that listens) to judge Your people, to discern between good and evil. For who is capable of judging this great people of yours?”
1 Kings 3:9 NASB2020
Putting together the different translations we get:
Godly Leaders need the ability to understand the difference between Right and Wrong. They will promote and stand on Godly morals, values and principles. They will govern or properly influence the people toward these fundamentals. Most importantly they will always lead from an attitude of love, not with fear.
When we think of having Godly Leaders we also must not only think in the political arena. It is just as important to have Godly Leaders who are in charge of businesses, police and fire departments, board of educations, pastors and teachers. Basically, anyone who has the ability to influence or inspire others. Godly parents are probably the most important leaders that we need in today’s world.
The Bible points out what society is like when we don’t have Godly Leaders in place. We will have homes, communities and societies that will go along in life aimlessly, without any direction. This type of leadership brings disorder and chaos. Eventually resulting in families, communities and nations falling into ruin and destruction.
“Where there is no [wise, intelligent] guidance, the people fall [and go off course like a ship without a helm], But in the abundance of [wise and godly] counselors there is victory.”
AMP 11:14 Proverbs
“Without wise leadership, a nation falls; there is safety in having many advisers.”
NLT 11:14 Proverbs
Of course, God is not a God of ruin and destruction. God desires to see individuals, families and nations flourish. God is a God of abundance. (See John 10:10)
We read many examples in the Bible of God’s desire for us to live prosperous and thriving lives if the people cooperated with God’s morals, values and principles. Here are just a few such verses.
“The Lord was with Joseph, and he was a successful man; and he was in the house of his master the Egyptian. And his master saw that the Lord was with him and that the Lord made all he did to prosper in his hand.” Genesis 39:2-3 NKJV
“Blessed is the one who does not walk in the step with the wicked or stand in the way that sinners take or sit in the company of mockers, but whose delight is in the law of the LORD, and who meditates on his law, day and night. That person is like a tree planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in season and whose leaf does not wither – whatever they do prospers.” Psalm 1:1-3
“Be strong and very courageous. Be careful to obey all the law my servant Moses gave you; do not turn from it to the right or to the left, that you may be successful wherever you go. Keep this Book of the Law always on your lips; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful.” Joshua 1:7-8
Deuteronomy 28:1-11 is another great example of those who are blessed when they follow God’s morals, values and principles.
“But without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him.” Hebrews 11:6
There are countless more verses throughout the Bible that reference the importance of Godly Leaders promoting God’s morals, values and principles, whether it is in the home or in the land.
In summary, do we want leaders who will inspire and encourage God’s morals, values and principles in the homes and throughout the land and create an atmosphere of peace, harmony and abundance or do we want leaders who don’t which leads to living with unrest, fear and anxiousness. The difference is enormous.
